The season 2000 of Guido Gosselink
Gosselink finishes 53rd in Ironman Hawaii Maui Xterra World Championships
And off they go...
Guido Gosselink finishes 53rd
3 december 2000 - In his first attempt in the Ironman Hawaii Guido Gosselink finished 53rd. Out of the water in 54.50 around place 100 he biked up to 27th place during the tough 180 kilometers in 4.53, which included a strong wind. Ironman vetaran Kenny Glah pointed out that it was the toughest day on bike in the last ten years. Due to these extreme conditions Gosselink suffered more from the heat and got a bit dehydrated during the run. A large blister stopped him at mile 19 and he went to the first aid to have it bandaged. He dropped down to 53rd position (9.20.06) in his rookie year 2000. This will leave enough space for him to do better next year!
3 december 2000 - One week after the Ironman Triathlon World Championships the Maui Xterra World Championships took place at the Outrigger Resort. One of the people who took up the challenge of the trying 'The Double' was Dutchman Guido Gosselink. Favorites in the race were Ned Overend, the defending champion, Michael Tobin, Mike Pigg, Wes Hobson and Mike Vine. The man to beat for 'The Double' was Ironman champion Peter Reid. Also in the field was Spanish Olympian Eneko Llanos. Gosselink came out of the water in 22nd postition, facing an almost two minute gap to the leaders. On the flat he drove untill 15th position as hell was entered. Sand, rocks, bush with sharp needles, Heartbreak Hill and Heartbreak down-Hill and then a flat tire. The rental bike turned out to have a non-working pump, so Gosselink had to wait for someone to pass on a pump. A second flat tire totally blew away all aspirations for the top 10. With a bike time more than 45 minutes slower than winner Michael Tobin Gosselink entered the seconde transition area out of the top 100. During the run he moved up to 75th position, recording the 10th fastest running time of the day. The women's race was won by Kerstin Weule. Peter Reid finished in tenth position and won 'The Double'.
Dereere/Heeren win duathlon Tubbergen (the Netherlands) Ralf Eggert wins Paderborn and car
25 september 2000 - Jurgen Dereere (BEL) en Irma Heeren (NED) showed very good form, two weeks before the duathlon World Championship in Calais. Dereere entered the transition area 31 seconds before Armand v.d. Smissen (NED) and Huub Maas (NED). The Dutch caught the Belgium guy on the bike, but couldn't get rid of him, even a stop-and-go did not separate the three on the bike. Due to the tactics applied by the leaders Nico Weerkamp (NED) and Guido Gosselink (NED) managed to almost close the gap of more than 2 minutes. In the second run Dereere was again the fastest runner and finished 27 seconds in front of v.d. Smissen. Maas held on to third place. V.d. Smissen, Maas and Weerkamp were selected by the Dutch Triathlon Federation (NTB) for Calais, Gosselink will start on Hawaii.

In the women's race Irma Heeren (NED) and Fiona Dochtery (NZL) ran side by side the first 10 km. On the bike Heeren showed strength by putting two and a half minute on Docherty with the fastest bike split of the day. Heeren ran to victory without being chased, Docherty placed second and Yvonna Tinga-Atsma (NED), Dutch duathlon champion, placed third. Heeren and Tinga-Atsma were selected for Calais by the NTB.

Unger/Molloy win 4th race German Bundesliga in Heidelberg A Bundesliga Bungle
6 august 2000 - In the beautifull town of Heidelberg the 4th race of the German Bundesliga was part of the Heidelbergman. The swim took place in the river Neckar and because of the flow the swim course was 1.7 km. A very demanding bike and run course were held traffic free for the race, which went through the old city and up to the castle. There a 450m height difference had to be completed twice, with some steep decents, over a 36 km course. The run was 5 km up the hill and the same course back 5 km downhill, with over 200m height difference.

The men and women's race took off together. First out of the water was Bryan Rhodes (NZL) in 18.33, followed closely by Arnd Schomburg (GER) and Christian Billau (GER). On the first climb Graig Cunningham (AUS) took the lead and kept that against a large group. The fastest bike time (1.06.59) however was made by Peter Sundstedt (FIN), who came of the bike 23 seconds after Cunningham. A group of six men (Daniel Unger (GER), Billau, Kris Gemmell (NZL), Schomburg, Guido Gosselink (NED) and Claude Eksteen (GER)) escaped the big pack and took 20 seconds. And then Unger took off and passed first Sundstedt and just after the turning point also Cunningham. Cruising in he ran 32.05, more than a minute faster than everyone. Cunningham came in second and Eksteen third. Guido Gosselink finished in 14th position.

First women out of the water was Leande Cave (AUS) in 18.45, one second in front of Unger(!). During the bike leg she held the lead, only Ute Schafer (GER), who came out of the water 3.41 behind was faster (1.18.43). Kirsten Molloy (AUS), 50 seconds behind in the swim, lost only 5 seconds on the bike and came of in second position. And like Unger she took off like a rocket, passing Cave and gave her 3.30 on the run. Cave held on to second and Ina Reinders (GER) passed Lucie Zelenkova (CHE) and Schafer to finish third.

In the overall standings Asics Team Witten leads in both the men and women's division. In the men's divison PZM Team SC Riederau is second, before Hannover 96. ELE Team SV Gladbeck '13 moved up to ninth position. PZM Team SC Riederau is also second in the women's division, where Tria Echterdingen is third.

The fifth and final race will take place in Witten on 19th of August.

24 august 2000 - Saturday's fifth and final stage of the German Bundesliga ended up a "non-event" for the men's teams, whose results were voided after most of the field started too soon -- and 15 other triathletes, left behind, refused to start at all.

The 15 triathletes -- including Germany's Andreas Niedrig and Arnd Schomburg, and Australia's Craig Cunningham -- stayed back on the starting line when all the others jumped the gun, minus any starting signal. Thinking that marshalls would call them back, the 15 waited for the race to be recalled. When that didn't happen, as the rest of the racers swam away, they simply didn't start.

There was, of course, no chance of catching the swim leaders. Guido Gosselink finished in 8th position, with Markus Foster in first place. It appeared that the voidance of the results reflected poorly on not just the athletes, but the DTU marshalls as well.

After the men's race was finished, the marshalls agreed to void the entire results. Rather than count five races toward the Bundesliga championship, they counted only the first four. That still left the "hometown team," PSV Witten, with the title.

PSV Witten also won the women's title. That race, which followed the men's, went off as usual. PSV Witten's Susanne Nielsen was the winner in 2:10:42, with Leanda Cave (SC Riederau) second and Yvonne Krömker (Sport Aktiv Paderborn) third.

The bike course consisted of four hilly loops. Ute Schäfer (Tria
Echterdingen) built a one-minute lead off the bike, into the run. But Nielsen kept her within sight and was always confident she would catch her. "I knew I was strong today and I believed in my running," Nielsen said of winning the race for the second straight year.

Denmark's Nielsen has a winning reputation within Bundesliga, and her teammates helped the club to the title once again. Ina Reinders (fourth), Kirsten Molloy (eighth) and Kerstin Lohmeyer (12th) completed the sucess for Witten. In the end -- minus counting the men's fifth race -- it was double victory for PSV Witten.

Landau triathlon turns into duathlon Guido Gosselink trains with Stefan Holzner
3 august 2000 - The Landauer Sparkassen Triathlon, 3rd race in the German Bundesliga on saturday 29th july 2000, had to be changed to a duathlon. Due to rainfall the river Isar was to high and the automatic valves in the river couldn't be closed. So for safety reasons the race was held over 10-36-5, where the run was probably a little bit on the short side in the first run due to the new starting line about 150m away from the transition area.

In the men's race it was German duathlon champion Markus Foster who came in first after the first run, being followed closely by a group of about 8 people. They formed the first group on the hilly bike course, with drafting allowed. They stayed together during the bike and in the second run it were Chris Kemmell (NZL) and Troy McKinna (AUS) who came in together, finishing both first, before Foster and Graig Cunningham (AUS). Huib Rost (NED) was the first runner of the second group on the bike. Daniel Unger (GER), one of the pre-race favorites fell behind in the second run due to cramps. Guido Gosselink, two-times winner of Landau ended up 23rd. The winning team was Asics Team Witten.

In the women's race Dagmar Lübeck came in first with a small lead on a chasing group of two, Yvonne Krömker and Nicole Leder (GER). Ina Reinders managed to close the gap on the bike and group of 4 was formed. In the last run nobody could catch up with this group which finished 1 to 4, with Krömker first, Lübeck second, Reinders third and Leder fourth. The winning team was PZM Team SC Riederau.

4 august 2000 - Guido Gosselink stays at the hotel of the Holzner family (Hotel Seeblick) and trains together with Stefan Holzner, 2-times winner of Ironman New Zealand, this year already 2nd at Ironman Lanzarote and 4th at Ironman Austria (Klagenfurt). Holzner trains now for Ironman Canada, while Guido Gosselink trains for the Open Dutch championships (Ironman distance) in Almere and Ironman Hawaii.
Gosselink 6-time top 10 Dutch Championships
15  july 2000 - Just six days after Ironman Europe Guido Gosselink finished 14th in the Open Dutch Championschips Olympic Distance. He was the 8th Dutchman and has finished now 6 times in the top 10 in the Dutch Championships Olympic Distance since 1994.
Qualification for Ironman Hawaii Professional versus amateur discussion
Ironman Europe in Roth10 july 2000 - In the German city Roth Guido Gosselink finished 12th in the male pro-field at the Ironman Europe. This was enough to qualify for the Ironman Hawaii on the 14th of october, a position among the first sixteen was needed. Gosselink finished in bad weather under nine hours: 8.56.32. The race was won by Lothar Leder (Ger) in 8.19.38, before his fellow countrymen Thomas Hellriegel and Andreas Niedrig. Heather Fuhr (Can) beated in 9.32.08 her countrywoman Lisa Bentley and German Ute Mückel.Guido Gosselink on the Solarer Berg 1 july 2000 - In the Triathlon Digest (www.TriathlonLive.com)a discussion went on on the pro-vs-amateur theme. This was the addition of Guido Gosselink:

In the Netherlands there is no real distinction between pros and amateurs. In fact you can start as an amateur, develop yourself and one day you find out that you can win some prize money by ending in the top 10 of a race. If you can find a sponsor to support you on your way to the top you can keep on developing to become a pro, in the meaning of earning an income from triathlon.

But it is also possible to stay somewhere between amateur and pro, for example by working parttime and devote the rest of your time to triathon training and racing, trying to earn some money with it. That's the way I did and in Europe it's clear: If you're good enough to finish in the top you deserve the prize money, no pro card or status is needed. Only in the Elite Circuit in the Netherlands (Zundert, Nuenen, Holten and Almere), the Dutch triathletes need a special Elite Licence, but only a few of those triathletes can really be called pros.

I can imagine someone with a ranking in the ITU worldranking signing up as an agegrouper, just to try to get to Hawaii. Those people also dream of going to Hawaii as something very special. Last year I tried to qualify for Hawaii as a pro in Ironman Switzerland and Florida, finishing 6th in both races. Not bad for a first long-distance year, but apparently not good enough to qualify, as there were only 3 pro slots in both races for the men (although a lot of discussion went on in Florida because more slots were announced in the months before and on the website).

In Ironman Europe (Roth, Germany) I will try for the third time to qualify as a pro, because I will always try to give my best and try to finish in the prizes. Now there are 16 slots for the male pros, so my chances are higher than ever. But if it doesn't work out well, maybe I'll sign up some day as an age grouper, because I want to do Hawaii at least once in my life.

Guido Gosselink finishes 27th at Worlds Ironman Roth
27 june 2000 - Guido Gosselink finished 27th at the Long Distance World Championships in Nice. After coming out of the water in 36th position he moved up to 26th position after the bike. During the run he came on to the 19th position, but stomach problems forced him to puke and he lost 8 places. His end time was 6.49.14. 27 june 2000 - In Roth (Germany) Guido Gosselink will try to qualify as a professional for the Hawaii Ironman in october. After missing qualification in Ironman Switserland and Florida in 1999 changes are much better now. A total of 16 slots are available for the mail pro's, as compared to the 3 slots in Switserland and Florida last year. He will try to break his record of 8.29.16 (Almere, 1999).
