The season 2002 of Guido Gosselink
Physical problems cause of tough Ironman Florida
Again second at wintertriathlon  Gosselink 32nd at IM Florida
27 october 2002 - Just like in 2001 Guido Gosselink was the first to arrive at the ice-track 'de Smelt' in Assen during the Dutch championship wintertriathlon. And just like in 2001 he was passed during the speedskating leg. This time Machiel Ittmann from Bussum took the title before Gosselink

After 20km running in 1.07.30 Gosselink had a 1.30 lead over last year's winner Arjen Kuper and Addy Ruiter. Ittmann was 4 minutes behind. During the 100km cycling with a lot of wind this difference stayed the same, as Kuper and Ruiter faded on the bike. In the last 10km Gosselink faded also a bit and Ittmann entered T2 after 3 minutes. A quick finish and a much better skating rythm brought Ittmann to the lead and won the race without any difficulties, as Gosselink ended the race with a sore back in second position, far enough before every years number three, Tiedo Tinga from Lemmer.

Uitslag:
1. Machiel Ittman        5.25.15
2. Guido Gosselink       5.32.40
3. Tiedo Tinga           5.39.17

25 november 2002 - A thirteenth thing is always a tricky one, the one you have to get over if you're superstitious. If that thirteenth thing is an Ironman triathlon this is even more true. After a good swim, in which Gosselink came out of the water with Jason Shortis, Rutger Beke, Raynard Tissink and Glenn Gore, a sore back already gave problems in the first kilometers of the bike leg. On the run these back problems caused his neuromuscular coordination to be very poor, resulting in a not well responding left leg. Gosselink managed to keep on running, which enabled him to get over his thirteenth Ironman distance race, so no superstitious thoughts can bother him in the next season. See for his results the results page.

World Championship LD in Nice
27 sepetember 2002 - Guido Gosselink finished 16th in the ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championship last weekend in Nice, France.

Winner was one of the French favorites, Cyril Neveu, who beated the three time world champion Peter Sandvang (Den). The Dane finished only as 9th. I a strong field Gosselink was not able to better his position from last year (15th). Fellow Dutchmen Casper van den Burgh and Vincent Bruins had to pull out due to physical nausea and stomach problems.
During the swim Gosselink lost some time at the farthest bouy, when his group did not swim into the right direction and swam extra meters. On the bike he came back to place 16 in the race and had to let go some stronger runners and also passed an even amount of weaker runners, to finish 16th.

Again top 10 NC Olympic Distance 10 times Olympic Distance
20 juni 2002 - Long distance specialist Gosselink was again good enough to finish in the Dutch top 10 for the 8th time in Zundert. Gosselink is not in the race for the overall win, as the drafting, which is allowed since 1997, has changed the Olympic Distance dramatically. Also the open character of the race is not in Gosselinks favor.

The last four years the National Championship was always preceded by a long distance race the weekend before: WC 2/3 Zweden (1999), Ironman Roth (2000), Stein 2/3 (2001) and NC 1/2 Nieuwkoop (2002).

20 juni 2002 - For the tenth time Guido Gosselink finished the national championships Olympic Distance:
2002 Zundert 7e
2001 Holten 8e
2000 Holten 8e
1999 Holten 3e
1997 Roermond 10e
1996 Roermond 4e
1995 Nuenen 9e
1994 Asten 8e
1993 Ammerstol 19e
1992 Oisterwijk 21e

Click for larger imageClick for larger image26 mei 2002 - In the middle distance triathlon of Nieuwkoop, which was also the national championship, Casper van den Burgh was by far the strongest athlete. Jonas Colting, third last year at the World Championship in Denmark finished second, with Guido Gosselink on the third podium spot, securing the silver medal in the Dutch Championship. The race was shown on TV channel SBS6, with an interview with the race winners and showing Gosselink on the run. Allround athlete Gosselink has now medalled in all five national championships held under the National Federation flag: Olympic Distance, Middle Distance, Long Distance, Duathlon and Wintertriathlon.

Gosselink struggles in Ironman Australia
20 april 2002 - In his first major race of the year Guido Gosselink started with a lot of confidence. After the swim things looked very good as Gosselink came out of the water in 50m33, just behind Peter Reid, Thomas Hellriegel and Olivier Bernhard. In the first 35 km Hellriegel and Gosselink just behind him made up more than a minute on Aussie leader Walton. Uptill 70 km in the bike leg Gosselink followed the group, a couple of minutes behind Aussies Walton and McCormack, the latter winning the race in the end before Bernhard. A poor bike performance due to the fast start of the bike leg, as Gosselink faded away from the top 10 during the second bike lap, prohibited a top 10 finish. Peter Reid faded even further away and withdrew after the bike finish. Far out of the top 20 Gosselink moved his way up in the field to finish 16th, which did not qualify him for a Hawaii pro-slot, as only 5 spots were available. As Gosselink struggled, Jason Shortis came on strong to finish 3rd behind Bernard, leaving Hellriegel for fourth and swim and bike leader Walton for fifth. Gosselink finished for the eighth time an Ironman race under 9 hours: 8.59.03

Gosselink wins aquathlon Enschede Gosselink faces tough competion down under
22 februari 2002 - The aquathlon in Enschede, organised by Triathlon Club Twente, was won by home town favorite Guido Gosselink. He swam 12.42 on the 1000, which was 1 second slower than German Lücke. After the restart German Gerrit Volcker from Stadtlohn also passed Gosselink, but the two team mates couldn't follow the steady pace of Gosselink, finishing in 35.32. Only Cees Colijn ran faster and took place 2, not able to make up all lost time in the swim. All results can be found at www.triathlonclubtwente.nl. 3 march 2002 - Germany's Thomas Hellriegel has confirmed he will join Normann Stadler, fellow German and reigning champion, at the Ironman Australia on April 7. In his last appearance in Forster-Tuncurry, Hellriegel finished second to Canada's Peter Reid in the 1997 race.

Also in the men's field, including the returning Reid, are
Aussies Craig Walton, Chris McCormack, Jason Shortis and Chris Legh. Additionally, Switzerland's Olivier Bernhard, Czech Republic's Jan Rehula and Canada's Jamie Cleveland are lining up.

Guido Gosselink will try to do better as his 6th place finishes in Switserland, Florida and New Zealand.

Trainingscamp in South Africa Egmond good test for knee
16 januari 2002 - All NTB-selections of the Olympic, Long Distance and Duathlon head today for a trainingscamp in Potchefstroom in South Africa. This altitude trainingscamp in summer conditions is the first where all selections go together. The total group is 22 people. Guido Gosselink has been to Potchefstroom twice and knows the surroundigs well. In 1999 the base was laid here for the season, with a 44th place in the Sydney World Cup race and 6th places in Ironman Switserland and Florida. 16 januari 2002 - The MTB race from Egmond to the pier at Wijk aan zee and back on saturday 12 january and the half marathon of Egmond on 13 january were for Guido Gosselink a good test for his knee. With 1.32 on saturday and 1.42 on sunday he did not compete for the 'double'. ' The most important thing was that I could bike and run without my knee hurting. From here I can pick up the normal training. The revalidation is finished now.'
