The season 2001 of Guido Gosselink
Knee surgery for Gosselink Gosselink second in wintertriathlon
8 december 2001 - The knee problems on Hawaii turned out to be caused by lose bone, which has been removed by professor Vierhout in the Medical Spectrum Twente by artroscopy. Gosselink will return to training in a few weeks, giving the knee all the time it needs to recover. It has been the third time for professor Vierhout to do an artroscopy on Gosselinks knee in 12 years. 5 november 2001 - In his last race of the 2001 season Guido Gosselink challenged defending Dutch wintertriathlon champion Arjan Kuper to the end of the skate-leg. Runing side by side the 20 km in 1h11.04, Gosselink had the fastest transition and built up a gap of 6min30 over the 100 km on the bike. National team duathlete and marathon skater Kuper closed the gap slowly during the 40 km on the ice, passing Gosselink after 32 km. Hawaii rookie Tiedo Tinga placed third, the same position as last year.
Gosselink not topfit in Ironman: 9.45.13
9 october 2001 - After the parade in Kona Guido Gosselink got pain in his knee, which turned out to be caused by the iliotibialis. With intensive fysiotherapy by Jaco van Delden, also competitor and practising on Oahu, Gosselink made it to the startline without pain in his knee, but not very topfit. He left the water in 90th position in just over 56 minutes. During the bikeleg he came up to the 37th position in Hawi, but faded on the way back after the 150km mark. During the run he just had nothing left to push for and ran a 3.32 marathon to finish 62nd position overall. Finishing time was 9.45.13, his slowest of 11 Ironman distance races. Host lady of the trainingscamp in Santa Monica, Peggy McDowell-Cramer, came in just before the cut-off of 17 hours, the last to finish the official race. Congratulations Peggy! Gosselink is gearing up for Ironman Trainingscamp Santa Monica
1 october 2001 - Ironman week has started in Kailua-Kona and the Dutch have arrived at Kona Pacific. Gosselink stays with age-groupers Pieter-Jan Paarlberg, Michel van der Hoeven and Jim Hagenstein, all from the Netherlands. Gosselink is the only Dutch professional this year, as multiple top 10 finisher Frank Heldoorn is at home becoming father for the second time. 25 september 2001 - Guido Gosselink has trained with age-groupers Pieter-Jan Paarlberg and Michel van der Hoeven in Santa Monica (California) in preparation for the Ironman Hawaii. They stayed at the house of Pat and Peggy Cramer and she will also compete in Hawaii. So the 9 hours time difference with the Netherlands was overcome and the remaining 3 hours will be swept away next week.
Seventh in Elite Circuit Paderborn shows good test
9 october 2001 - By finishing 14th in the last of 4 Elite Circuit races in Almere Guido Gosselink fall back from second to seventh position. Missing the second group on 25 seconds, Gosselink biked the 40km on his own and ran the 7th fastest run-time, but could not gain a place during the run. Gosselink strong on bike, finished seventh9 october 2001 - For the fourth time in four years Guido Gosselink competed in the Paderborn City Triathlon. In this sprint distance race Ironmen Lothar Leder and Ralf Eggert were also present. Finishing the swim last in the Elite field of 25 Gosselink posted the fastest bike split to come of the bike in third position in this draft-legal race. Leaders Petzold and Raelert were to far away. Leder, Cunningham, Weimar and Eggert just ran past Gosselink, who could hold of Kuttor (Hun) for seventh place.
Experience important in Xterra Netherlands
Guido Gosselink in transition9 october 2001 - After the startsign the athletes had to breack through the surf and swim parallel to the beach for 800m. Then they headed back to the beach, ran 300m back en rounded another gulfbreaker. Triathlon legend Rob Barel, Gijs Klerkx and Arjan Schilder were the fastest swimmers.
Numbers 1 and 2 in the raceWhile  mountainbiking on the beach and in the dunes it turned out that experience was a major factor in this race. Barel, who also rides for the Bianchi MTB-team, took off and youngsters Klerkx and van Pamelen faded. A group with Frans van Heteren, Royce Kortekaas and Guido Gosselink was not able to threaten Barel. Especially in the technical part in the dunes at Hoek van Holland Barel added time to his lead and he could run the race with 3 minutes ahead. Running in the dunes Gosselink was a little bit faster than Van Heteren, who dropped Kortekaas.

In the women's race the experienced masters took control over the race. Marijke Zeekant was first out of the surf, but Joke Keuning, last year's winner came by on the bike. Keuning, riding a home town race, knew exactly the course and held her lead in the run. Judy van den Berg came late out of the water, but came on strong to finish third.
1. Barel, 2. Gosselink, 3. Van HeterenIt was striking that not all competitors rode on non-profile on the beach and therefor on beforehand could not play a role in the race. Under those was Englishman Richard Hobson, who indicated that he had never done a beach race before and only in the dunes found out that his legs were not so bad as he thought, but that his profile tires at 5 bar were not suited for the beach.

Athletes leaving the water for the second swim lap 9 october 2001 - Peter Sandvang and Lisbeth Kristinsen, both from Denmark, took on 5 august the ITU Long Distance World Titles on the Ironman distance in Fredericia (Den). In front of 30.000 spectators they took the lead on the bike and did not give it back on the run. The whole podium was a Scandinavian party, with Henning (Den) and Colting (Swe) on place 2 and 3 in the men's race and Wahlquist (Swe) and Nielsen (Den) in the women's race. The Dutch women Bianca van Dijk and Marijke Zeekant ended with place 4 and 6 both within the top 10. Frank Heldoorn took 10th in the men's race. Guido Gosselink came out of the water with Heldoorn, but had to let him go in a rainshower. On the run Gosselink refound himself with 3.08 and ran to place 15, the same result as his best World Championship result in 1999. Richard van Diesen finished 25th, Cora Vlot 14th and Mariska Kramer 17th.
Again top 10 in Dutch Championship Tough race in Stein

Bert van Losser interviewed Gosselink, with flowers just received
9 october 2001 - With an 8th position in the Holten triathlon Guido Gosselink finished for the seventh time in the top 10 of the Dutch Championship Olympic Distance Triathlon. Six days after his 4th place finish in the middle-long distance race of Stein Gosselink was two minutes behind winner and Dutch Champion Eric van der Linden in the swim. The bike leg brought Gosselink in the chase group, clsoing in to a little over one minute. During the run nothing changed in the positions, leaving Gosselink on 11th place in the race and 8th in the Championship. Full results on thewebsite of the Holten triathlon. After the race Gosselink received flowers from the group, which he had trained leading up to this race.
4th place in Stein9 october 2001 - The middle-long distance race of Stein turned out to be a tough race. Three major hills (Snijdersberg, Dennenberg and Elsloo hill) were to be climbed four times. Van Gossum (Bel) was the strongest on the hills and put time on German Lautenbacher. Gosselink and Heldoorn were on place 3 and 4, with Bruins on two minutes. Lautenbacher outran Van Gossum, who held Heldoorn of for second. Bruins ran to place three in the first two laps, but almost collapsed in the third and fall back to fifth, so Gosselink finished 4th in this 3-108-30 km race. Zundert ITU points race Nuenen ITU points race
9 october 2001 - By finishing as third Dutchman in the ITU points race in Zundert Guido Gosselink secured him a spot on the national team for the European Championship in Carlsbad (Tsj). In the heavy field Gosselink only ended on the 24th place, more than 3 minutes behind Luc van Lierde (Bel).

He gave his spot back, as he already told on Triathlon Lijst Nederland: ' My swimming is to weak to be a player on that field, I don't see any opportunities to to better than my 13th place in 1997 in Vuokatti (Fin). I will do Stein and the ITU World Championship in Fredericia, so I will train for the long races.

But it is still nice to race the 'young guys' and to see that you're still a Championship level racer. But in the Netherlands, except for Eric van der Linden, who DNF-ed in Zundert due to mechanical bike problems, no one is really a top-international. I can't be good that two Ironman specialsts (Gosselink and Herremans) bike together and than outrun most of the OD national team members. I think Raymond Lotz will be happy that he can collect my place.'

9 october 2001 - In the last triathlon of Nuenen Australian Chapman was the fastest sprinter against Belaubre, the French Junior World Champion. Third was Brittain's Simon Lessing, racing for the first time in the Netherlands. He was almost disqualified by putting his race number in front and not showing the number on his back on the bike. Guido Gosselink could be found in the chase group, who rode 44 km/h the 40 km course. A part of the gap was closed, but remained 1 minute 30 seconds. On the run Gosselink outran the faster transitioning Dutchmen Cals and Laven and finished in 16th place as first Dutchman in 1.48.30. Chapman won the race in the fast time of 1.43.33.
Dutch success in Mad Beach triathlon
Wisselzone naast het strand15 june 2001 - One week after Gulf Coast Triathlon Guido Gosselink and Anke Tuinman took podium places at the Mad Beach Mad Dogs Triathlon in St. Petersburg in Florida. Anke Tuinman came as first woman to finish line,  but two women in the agegroup division, who started later, were faster. A first place overall for the partner of Guido Gosselink. Gosselink followed comfortably on the bike and outran his concurrents in the last kilometer of the 5k along the boulevard.
Rukosuev reigns in Gulf Coast Triathlon, Gosselink 3rd
15 june 2001 - Alec Rukosuev was again the strongest triathlete in the Gulf Coast Triathlon in Panama City (Florida). He lead from start till finish, winning for the sixth time. On the bike Chris Esbach (USA) and Guido Gosselink managed to keep the gap within 3 minutes. On the run Esbach faded and Gosselink closed in on Rokusuev, untill the laces of his shoe broke. After the necessary reparation he was out of concentration and went of the course. After turning and running back 3 minutes were lost and Gosselink just cruised in on second place. Afterwards Bruca Gennari (USA), who started in the second wave turned out to be 30 seconds faster.
Thales UT triathlon 25th career win for Gosselink
8 may 2001 - The Thales UT triathlon, held on the campus of the Unversity of Twente, has been won by former UT student Guido Gosselink, which turned out to be his 25th win in his career. The race was organised by Aloha, the students triathlon club on the university, which has Gosselink as member since the foundation of the club. Jetse Scholma, Wico Hopman and Jan Maneschijn gave Gosselink strong competition during the swim, but were not able to follow him on the bike. Due to the wind Gosselink finished 1.05 minute from the course record held by Olympian Roland Melis (Netherlands Antilles). Gosselink won this event for the second time, after the first time nine years ago. Second was Jerzy Kasemier, strong on the bike and third finished another youngster, Cees Colijn.

Gosselink takes Hawaii pro-slot with 6th place in Ironman New Zealand
6 march 2001 - 930 triathletes dove into Lake Taupo that morning for the Ironman New Zealand to swim 3.8 km. Gosselink swam 51.05, which was somewhat faster than what he had counted on. He was in a group with Stefan Holzner. His fast transition brought him in front of Gosselink, which was the same for pre-race favorites Cameron Brown (nr. 1 seeded) and world champion Peter Sandvang (nr 2. seeded). Peter Sandvang was flying on the bike, building up a lead of 12 minutes to a group with all other favorites, including Brown, Holzner , Gosselink, Cleveland and onthers. Half way through an acceleration caused half the group including Gosselink to fall behind. Gosselink managed to get back to the group in a very fast downhill acceleration and managed to stay there untill the end of the bikeleg. Everybody expected Sandvang to win easily, but he turned in an average marathon, while Brown ran the marathon of his life, passing Sandvang only in the last kilometer to win his first Ironman in 8.24.28 against 8.25.49. Holzner came in third in 8.31. By finishing 6th in 8.44.23 Guido Gosselink took his second consecutive professional slot for the Hawaiian Ironman.
