The season 2003 of Guido Gosselink
Guido scores 10th sub 9 hour Ironman distance triathlon in Florida
Ironman Florida finish
8 november 2003 - Guido Gosselink, reigning Dutch champion Long Distance, did not reach his goal in Ironman Florida. He wanted to use the last international race of the year to qualify as a professional for the Ironman Hawaii in 2004.

During the swim and bike leg the Dutchman was still racing for one of the five slots, coming out of the water together with later winner Timo Bracht (GER) in 17th position and slowly progressing till 4th position at km 80 in the race. Steve Larssen and James Bonney (USA) passed him, while Gosselink sticked to his own plan and did not accelerate. However at the end of the marathon Gosselink passed them both again. On the coastal Highway a few kilometers before the transition area
Christophe Bastie (FRA) and Dave Harju (CAN) came by.

These two ran together the whole marathon, with the Frechman taking the fifth slot in with a run time of 3.04.49. Guido Gosselink, in the Ironman-distance triathlon of Almere good for 3.05.10, now ran a disappointing 3.18.26. He finished 14th in 8.56.35. This race was Gosselink's 15th Ironman distance race (3.8km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km run) and his 10th with a time under 9 hours.

Runners beat the bikers at Holland triathlon Almere
31 august 2003 - The Dutch triathletes Guido Gosselink and Frank Heldoorn came out of the water in the first group of six athletes. A fast transition brought them in front and the worked hard to build a big lead on the fast runners, Gerrit Schellens, Peter Kropko and Victor Zyemstev. At the 160 km mark Gosselink had to let go Heldoorn, who took a few minutes in the end. During the run Schellens was the fastest man of the day with a 2.38 marathon, passing Kropko, Gosselink and at 35km Heldoorn. Kropko passed Gosselink, who had took a sanitary stop, at the half-way mark. Victor Zyemstev (UKR) was not able to catch Gosselink

Guido wins duathlon Enschede
17 august 2003 - The triathlete from Enschede Guido Gosselink showed today to be right on schedule for the preparation for the Almere Holland Triathlon, which will take place on august 30th. The triathlon in Enschede had to be replaced by a duathlon, due to botulism (bacteria) in the water of the Twente-canal. Distances were 10km run, 40km bike and 5km run. Gosselink started slowly, taking the lead after 5km and finishing the first 10km in front of the field. On the bike he took 3 more minutes and could easily run the last 5km. Cees Colijn from Apeldoorn took second, before Wico Hopman from  Enschede.

Gosselink: "With 30 hours of training this week I started quite conservative, let the others take off and I took the lead when they started to fade a little. I suppose I've overcome all the effforts in Denmark and I hope to be good in two weeks in Almere on the classic distances of the Holland Triathlon."

Fastest woman was Tanya de Boer, member of Triathlon Club Twente from Enschede. She ran down the experienced Brigit Landewe from Boekelo. Anke Tuinman, girlfriend of the men's winner, took third.

Gosselink wins first silver at European Championships in Denmark
11 august 2003 - Five weeks after winning the Dutch title on the Long Distance in Stein Guido Gosselink improved himself to win a historical first silver medal at the European Championships in Denmark. In Stein Gosselink finished second behind Gerrit Schellens from Belgium, but in this race Gosselink created a large gap on the bike to try to put up the fast running Schellens with an impossible task to catch Gosselink. Danish pre-race favorite Torbjorn Sindballe only gave 45 seconds away on Gosselink on the bike and was able to pass him in the first of four laps on the run. Gosselink then held on to the second place, although Schellens came back to less than a minute, running 11 minutes faster than Gosselink. A penalty lap given to Schellens by showing him the black card for drafting was just enough to keep him from silver.

29 july 2003 - Coming sunday August 3rd Guido Gosselink will start in the European Championship Long Distance Triathlon in Fredericia (Denmark).

This year it was a race to show his national red-white-blue jersey to the local public in what is his home-race by now. Six day recovery was enough to be fit, but in this strong field of the ITU-points races he was not able to be a real factor in the field. Gosselink finished 27th in 1.53.38, four minutes behind world's number three, ex-world champion Dimitry Gaag from Kazachstan.

Guido Gosselink wins first national Long Distance title in Stein triathlon
Guido Gosselink runs to national title30 june 2003 - During the Dutch Championship Long Distance, held yesterday in Stein, Limburg, Guido Gosselink made true by finishing second behind the Belgian Gerrit Schellens and first in the national championship the long lasting believe that he was capable of winning the national title.

The triathlete from Enschede stood on the podium already eight times at all distances and disciplines: long distance triathlon, middle distance triathlon, olympic distance triathlon, duathlon and wintertriathlon. But he never won a gold medal, always bronze or silver.

During the 3km swim in the Juliana-canal Gosselink had to let Casper van den Burgh swim away 45 seconds. On the bike Gosselink and Schellens were soon to be found on the position two and three in the race. Frank Heldoorn lost contact with them after a mechanical stop on the Snijdersberg, the heaviest climb in the course. Van den Burgh's lead grew to over 3 minutes after two of the four bike laps. Then he started to have stomach problems and had to slow down a bit. Gosselink, unable to loose Schellens on the bike, almost closed the gap until 45 seconds.

Schellens started fast on the run and after 2 km he was leading the race. Without any threat he ran to a lead of over six minutes. It took Gosselink a little more time to catch Van den Burgh, but in the last two laps he ran four minutes away from him. Van den Burgh just had enough power to stay ahead of Heldoorn to collect the silver at the championship.

Pre-race favorite was New Zealand's Shane Reed, who had placed second in the Open Dutch Championships and even won the Open German Championships last two weekends.

Een eindsprint leverde de achtste plek op
He proved to be the only right favorite, with the fastest swim and run time in this drafting free Olympic Distance. The bike leg (45 km) over the Mount St. Odile (over 500m climbing), was tough, but Reed was able to stay in front. Team mate Ritchie Cunningham (Aus) ran to second place, just seconds before fastest biker Yannick Bourseaux from France. Fastest from Triathlon Club Twente was Guido Gosselink, at eighth place after a sprint to the finish with LePetit from France (see picture). With Jasper Reenalda at position 47 and Jan Wullink at position 53 the team reached 7th place. They both will compete at Ironman France next weekend in Gerardmer, also situated in the Vosges in France.

Guido Gosselink finished 25th on Ibiza
Klik voor uitvergroting 12 may 2002 - Guido Gosselink finished a reasonable 25th at the World Championships Long Distance Triathlon on the island Ibiza (Spain). This was only his second race for Gosselink, who was wounded in an accident in which a car crashed into him only seven weeks before. A second place, last week in Breukelen showed that Gosselink was able to start in Ibiza.

Gosselink had a good start with a solid swim, in a large group of triathletes at about 3 minutes of the leaders. During the bike leg a large group was formed, which grew because some of the faster swimmers were overtaken by the group. Due to the fact that the jury was very mild against drafting this group stayed together until the end of the bike leg. Only the later winner Eneko Llanos (Spain) was able to stay ahead  and started to run in first position. A fast start of the group was too much for Gosselink to follow and he managed to stay in the top 15 until the 25km point. Here he started to have stomach problems and had to throw up. The last few kilometers felt like miles and he fell back to the 25th place.

After the race Gosselink told that he, apart from the problems in the last 5 km, was very pleased with the race, knowing his very far from optimal preparation. Now it is a question of time to train for the following race to have the base optimal again.

Gosselink himself: "This race was still a little bit to early for me. In the preparation I lost too many trainingshours. Now I'm going to train for the coming races and I have the feeling that I can show some nice results this season. At least I have shown that I'm fully recovered after my crash and this gives me confidence for the near future!"

On the bike Gosselink came back to 15 seconds, but Ten Brink showed his good form with the fastest run of the day.
